  1. ClipMate 4.2 Release Notes
  2. Version 4.2.0 Build 110  (2nd release of build 110, with fixed installation)
  3. January 11, 1997

  5. UPGRADING FROM 4.0
  6. ------------------
  7. If you are a registered user, then your key will automatically
  8. work with the new software.  Nothing to buy, just download and run
  9. the install.
  10.  
  11. For those of you who like to peek under the hood, you'll notice that
  12. the default directory for new installations will be \Program Files\Clipmt42
  13. or \Clipmt42 (depending on what environment you're running.)  But if you're
  14. upgrading from v4.0, then it will find the old path (ends in 40 not 42), 
  15. and pick the existing path. That's FINE!  It protects your data that way.  
  16. If you do decide to use the new path anyway, then adjust the "Home Dir" 
  17. and "Data Dir" settings in the User Preferences dialog so that it finds the 
  18. data, and move the data directory from the old path.  
  19.  
  20. NT USERS
  21. --------
  22. There is still a problem with NTFS compression.  If you're using NTFS
  23. compression, you will have to turn off compression on the directory 
  24. where ClipMate's data files are located.  This will be addressed
  25. in a future maintenance release.  
  26.  
  27. FIXES IN 4.20 Build 110
  28. -----------------------
  29. 1) We changed the version - due to popular misconception, and since
  30.    there are so many fixes, we're calling it 4.2
  31. 2) Data loss bug that occurred when moving items from one collection
  32.    to another, particularly items that had peviously been saved. (fixed)
  33.    (This was a long-time problem)
  34. 3) Bug introduced in 4.02, where copies from certain applications like
  35.    PowerPoint97 caused ClipMate to copy repeatedly until you shut it
  36.    down.  (Fixed)  
  37. 4) Dialog Boxes not readable on systems without Arial font.
  38.    Fixed - Arial font removed, replaced with MS Sans Serif in all dialogs.
  39. 5) Dialog boxes get chopped off at bottom on systems with 640x480 display.
  40.    Fixed.
  41. 6) "Index Out of Bounds" error in Picker or Main windows.  (Fixed)
  42. 7) Phantom Icon problem is fixed yet again - for good this time.
  43.    Adjustable "Startup Delay" in User Preferences (Advanced) dialog
  44.    can delay as long as necessary to avoid the problem.  If you have
  45.    double-icons, increase the setting by a second or two.
  46. 8) Problem in build 101 which caused crashes during shutdown,
  47.    as well as other random GPFs.  (Fixed)
  48.  
  49. ENHANCEMENTS IN 4.20 Build 110
  50. ------------------------------
  51. 1) User Preferences dialog has another tab - "Advanced", which is
  52.    where some of less frequently used options now reside.
  53. 2) Adjustable PowerPaste Delay setting
  54. 3) "Agressive Clipboard Chain Monitoring" feature of build 92 can 
  55.    optionally be turned off.  
  56. 4) When deleting from a "Safe" collection, you can be prompted for
  57.    confirmation.  See User Preferences dialog to set.
  58. 5) When deleting "all items", you are always prompted for confirmation.
  59. 6) "Application Profiles" menu option under Config.  
  60.  
  61. LEFT OUT OF Build 110
  62. ---------------------
  63. It has already been brought to our attention that the "beep at the
  64. end of PowerPaste" is missing.  We'll put it back.

  67. FIXES IN 4.02 Build 92  (4.2 used to be called 4.02)
  68. ----------------------
  69. 1) Error when loading empty collection : "No .BAK exists..." (Fixed)
  70. 2) Data loss when editing item in a collection that doesn't receive any
  71.    additional new items - it would "forget" to save the edited data. (Fixed)
  72. 3) Scroll bars in Magnify Window - often missing horizontal scroll bar
  73.    when viewing wide data. (Fixed)
  74. 6) Metafile Problems - Clip Items containing Metafiles (Pictues) wouldn't
  75.    paste into applications.  (Fixed)
  76. 7) PowerPaste would sometimes get confused, if you re-selected an item
  77.    while PowerPaste was active. (Fixed)
  78. 8) "Can't Open Clipboard" problem in applications like Excel95. (Fixed)
  79. 9) Missing Cut/Copy/Paste/Undo menu in Magnify Window - (Restored).
  80. 10)"Application Name Unavailable" perpetually displayed in Clipboard 
  81.    Diagnostics Window, when ClipMate was actually first in line.  Now
  82.    it says "ClipMate".  (Fixed)
  83.  
  84. Enhancements:
  85. -------------
  86. 1) When Auto-Capture is disabled, and you're using the SysTray icon,
  87.    a red NO symbol (\) appears on the icon.
  88. 2) Glue from Picker Window usually glued items in the reverse order
  89.    from the order in which they were captured.  i.e. it glued top to 
  90.    bottom, no matter what you actually desired.
  91.    Now it looks to see the order in which you're selecting items, 
  92.    and will glue in the same "direction" (top to bottom, or bottom 
  93.    to top).
  94. 3) ClipMate will now aggressivly re-establish broken Clipboard connections.
  95.    (Other applications could cut-off the clipboad notification process
  96.    by improperly handling messages, or by crashing.  Now, ClipMate takes
  97.    preventative measures to ensure that it is first in line for all Clipboard
  98.    messages, regardless of load order.)
  99. 4) "Shut Down" option now availble from SysTray menu.

  102. RE-INSTALLATION
  103. ---------------
  104. If you are installing this version over the top 
  105. of a previous build of ClipMate 4 (including beta)
  106. then here are some common questions:
  107. Q: Will my existing ClipMate 4 registration number
  108.    continue to work?
  109. A: YES - the registration is kept in CLIPMT40.INI,
  110.    which is preserved.
  111.    (provided that you HAVE previously registered
  112.    version 4)
  113.  
  114. Q: Will my data be overwritten or deleted?
  115. A: No - the install only replaces files with updated
  116.    ones - no deleting is performed.
  117.  
  118. Q: Should I uninstall the old one first?
  119. A: Yes.
  120.  
  121. Q: What about version 3.x registration numbers, will
  122.    they work?
  123. A: No - you need to upgrade.

  134. > ClipMate would sometimes stop capturing if left on 
  135.   past 12:00 AM.  This was due to some errant date 
  136.   logic which protects against duplicates.  Fixed.

  139. > A hard-coded pathname made it problematic to move 
  140.   ClipMate to a different drive or diectory - fixed.
  141. > The main menu was missing an underscore for the 
  142.   Config menu item.

  145. > The Appliation Profile is now a little "smarter", 
  146.   as it now knows about WordPerfect 7.

  150. > Bitmaps were not being properly de-allocated from memory
  151.   when they weren't the current active item.  Fixed.
  152. > Build 83 had the main window a few pixels to short 
  153.   vertically, which caused the bottom edge of the window 
  154.   to be chopped a little.  (cosmetic)

  158. > Fixed GPF that occurred when you invoked Collection
  159.   Management dialog from right-click menu in the
  160.   Activate Collection drop-down list.
  161. > Fixed problem with Application Profiles, which prevented
  162.   profiles from being built for the Win95 Explorer.
  163. > Altered work-around for Brian Quinon's Spell program.

  166. Known Problems:
  167. ---------------
  168. There are several known problem that exist on some
  169. systems.  We are working on fixing them, but they are
  170. not severe enough to delay the launch.  Check our WWW
  171. page for updates.
  172.  
  173. > Help - Out Of Memory messages.
  174.   These are harmless errors that occur if you click
  175.   on a hypertext link, appearing in a pop-up help
  176.   window ("What's This" style help windows).  
  177.   We think that it's really a bug in the Help system,
  178.   and since the popup help does double-duty as part
  179.   of the regular help system, we don't really want
  180.   to remove the links, which are valuable when working
  181.   with the regular help system.   
  182. > Hotkey conflicts - The hotkeys (32-bit only) can
  183.   conflict with other applications, if the same keys
  184.   are used.  This usually affects F1..F12 or 
  185.   Shift+F1..Shift+F12.  Just turn them off, if they
  186.   cause trouble.
  187.   This has been known to affect WordPerfect, as well
  188.   as other word processors that make use of F-keys.
  189. > Stay On Top option doesn't work when iconified in 
  190.   non-windows95-gui systems.
  191. > Tab Behavior Problem - 16-bit only.
  192.   Tab in User Prefs dialog gets 
  193.   fouled once you click into the Application Profile 
  194.   settings.  This is easily worked-around by simply
  195.   closing the dialog, and re-opening it.
  196.  
  197. Missing Features:
  198. -----------------
  199. There are several features from 3.1 that aren't currently 
  200. implemented, but will arrive in later builds:
  201.  > "sticky icon" - icon remembers position on screen (not yet
  202.    implemented)
  203.  > Control Menu (menu attached to icon) (not implemented)
  204.  Most of these are addressed in different ways when using
  205.  Windows95 / NT 4.0.
  206.  > DIB Bitmaps - ClipMate can't currently display them.  
  207.    We'll add this feature in a later release.

  209. Compatibility Notes:

  212.  Brian Quinon's Spell Program
  213.  ----------------------------
  214.  We are working with Brian on a permanent solution, but 
  215.  in the meantime, this is how you make ClipMate ignore
  216.  the Spell program, if you get errors in Spell:
  217.    add this line to your \windows_directory\clipmt40.ini file, 
  218.    at the end of the [CLIPMATE] section:
  219.        Ignore_MSGSRV32=1
  220.  
  221. Distribution
  222. ------------
  223. This version does not have the required VENDINFO.DIZ and
  224. FILE_ID.DIZ files required for distribution.  Please do
  225. not distribute this release to other online services until
  226. we provide these files.
